Farakka Super Thermal Power Station (FSTPS) is one of the major coal-based power plants operated by NTPC Limited (National Thermal Power Corporation). It is located at Farakka, in Murshidabad district, West Bengal, near the Farakka Barrage and the Ganga River. Foundation: The project was initiated in the 1970s to meet the increasing power demand in eastern India, particularly for West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Sikkim. Commissioning: Stage-I (3 x 200 MW): Commissioned between 1981 and 1986. Stage-II (2 x 500 MW): Commissioned in 1992 and 1995. Stage-III (1 x 500 MW): Commissioned in 2011. The total installed capacity is 2,100 MW (7 units). The plant has adopted Electrostatic Precipitators (ESPs) for controlling fly ash emissions. Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) and ash utilization projects are being developed to reduce pollution. The Farakka Township was built to house employees and includes schools, hospitals, and community facilities.
