This authentic dosa house in Kolhapur is the pioneer of South Indian butter dosa outlet not only in Kolhapur region but the whole of South Maharashtra. Started 25 years ago, hailing from the dosa town of Davanagere, the owner began selling the iconic benne (butter) dosas just at Rs. 8 each on a lorry served with sumptuous potato bhaji, heavenly coconut chutney and soft crispy dosas made in dollops of pure butter. Few years down the line they added medu wada and idlis to their menu. The most recent to be added to their serving list are Tumkur tatte idli and fasting (upvaas) foods like Sabudana Khichdi. Trust me, their tatte idlis sell faster than their dosas! If you go there for brunch, you are most likely to miss their tatte idlis, as they get over. Located at the busiest junction of Ardha Shivaji Putala in Shivaji Peth, which is in proximity to the the city's guardian diety; Mahalakshmi Amba Bai, devotees of her temple, tourists in the city and South Indian foodies make a beeline to this place. This eatery is any time bustling with patrons. And yes, consider yourself lucky, if you get a table immediately or have your order served asap, otherwise the scene resembles that of a wedding venue. The journey of Kolhapur's original Davangiri Benne Dosa from a streetside lorry to a 3-storey building, from Rs.8/dosa to Rs 80/dosa has been nothing short of phenomenal in a span of quarter of a century. The owners honest smile, ingenuity in breaking the food ice for impossible Kolhapuris who are hardcore spicy Misal and mutton eaters; the consistent, quality buttery dosas served in hygenic SS plates and SS tables with unlimited bhaji and chutney, has melted their hearts such that it has become indispensable now. Scores of imitation Davanagere benne dosas have sprung across the length and breadth of the region, following the fame of the original disa centre, but none have been able to match their standards and quality. Whether South Indians or South Indian food lovers, your sojourn is incomplete in the city, until you have savored the original benne dosa of Kolhapur.
